Here is my Media Studies Lesson Plan for a Grade 7 class! I have a lesson plan and two handout activities to go along with the video!
“Say Cheese” (2001) Video Lesson Plan
Grade 7 Media Literacy – Creative Writing & Connecting with the World
Objectives & Goal(s) of this lesson:
· To help students understand the concepts behind the video, the message the director is trying to show & to connect and relate them to the world in order to have a better understanding of this emotion, and how it can be incorrect
· To help them express their thoughts in an organized fashion that is clear and precise
· Learn about morals and right from wrong, feelings of guilt and remorse, greed and selfishness
Materials:
· Thought Process Handout and Idea worksheet
· Video “Say Cheese” (2001) youtube.com
Lesson Components:
1. Begin class with Mind Graph on the board (cloud with ideas coming from it)
2. Words inside the cloud are “greed” and “selfish”
3. Have students give ideas on what these words mean to them/what they mean
- Prompt with “What does this word mean? What does it mean to you? What is it? Is it bad or good? How is it used?”
4. Have students write these down on their own charts/handouts
5. Introduce the video
6. Have students write down thoughts and ideas on the Thought Process Handout as they watch the video
7. Finish the video and discuss what happened
8. Have them discuss with a partner what they thought
9. Discuss as a class:
· How did the mouse act?
· Why was he afraid?
· What is the moral behind this video?
· Have you ever been in this type of a position?
10. ASSIGNMENT:
Students are to creatively write about the video this way:
· Change the ending of the video (rewrite)
· Relate to the video (text to text, text to world, text to self)
· Explain why this was morally wrong and how it connects to the world
· Can create a movie poster for the video
Assessment:
· By having a class discussion before, can help students get their minds wrapped around an idea ie. The idea of greed, can get thoughts flowing
· Having a class discussion before can show thinking and participation
· Discussing with other students can help open their minds to someone else’s interpretation on the same subject/thought
· I can see that they understand the concept by expressing what they see in the video and what the words mean to them
· At the end, the written assignment will show their understanding of what they can put together
· Can help to understand and see strengths and weaknesses in the students writing
